Engrama

I was lucky enough to get a moment to chat to Lakua Arriaga about her store, Ionic, and band, Engrama. Engrama are a band who play in Second Life, so that people from around the world can attend their concerts online.

What amazes me about Engrama is their ability to produce the sound of an full band with only two people - both singing, playing the guitar & drums :)

Here is Engrama's bandcamp page:

Daughter - Still

Daughter, the trio from London have recently released their first album, 'If You Leave'. This release follows after 2011's 'His Young Heart' and 'The Wild Youth' EPs and the 'Smother' single in 2012.

Daughter's music is as ethereal as any release from their label, 4AD - folksy, and if you sift through the layers of just plain beauty, you'll discover... well, I'll leave that for you ;)

The song 'Still' is a single from the new album:

Kishi Bashi: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

K Ishibashi is a master of building his music from the ground up, from live violin loops to layered singing to beatboxing, in order to create pocket symphonies steeped in classical music and 21st-century pop. He brings that ingenuity and songcraft to the Tiny Desk at the NPR Music offices.

The Lone Bellow - Teach Me to Know

So first, story time...Long, long ago (but not at all far away), I listened to the music that eventually drew me into the world of what we today call alternative/indie. We here in Texas called that music I listened to "Third Coast Music".

The Lone Bellow takes me back to that time - of Cross Canadian Ragweed, The Red West, Robert Earl Keen - but also some of today's music, like the most recent Band of Horses album, Elliott Brood, The Great American Canyon Band, or even a little Lord Huron.

I've discovered a lot of great music lately, but I had to share The Lone Bellow with you because it might be something you don't get a chance to hear through your regular channels. I hope you enjoy a little foray into this world that appeals to my Texan sensibilities.

Ben Howard - Depth Over Distance

I love how increasingly, the Indie Cantina story is becoming the Ben Howard story ;) By far, he's collected the most posts on this blog - as you can see in the tag cloud on the right.

He keeps delivering amazing music - and this track is no exception:

Cold War Kids - Miracle Mile

The new Cold War Kids album is called 'Dear Miss Lonelyhearts' and is due soon - April 2, 2013. Here's the single:

Cold War Kids - Miracle Mile

I was supposed to do great things
I know the road was long
But I wasn't raised to shoot for fame
I had the safety on

I cut my ties, I sold my rings
I wanted none of this
If you start from scratch, you'll have to sing
Just for the fun of it

I'd be alright if I could just see you
Come up for air, come up for air
A miracle mile, where does it lead to?
Come up for air, come up for air

I feel the air upon my face
Forget the mess I'm in
Hold me again, don't count mistakes
I lost track of them

I was in the mud, I was in the dirt
Went underground and found what I was worth
All alone and I know I can't stay
So I'm walking up and down the streets to stay awake

Come up for air, come up for air, come up

Get outside, get all around the world
You learn to love what you get in return

Mallory Cerise - Three Mixes

Mallory Cerise's witch house mixes are shimmery, eerie; night-fueled soul-food:

My Secret Name

Mallory's introduction to the Black Lodge Witch track reads:

"One of my aspirations is to create a musical space in which David Lynch's hauntology and Dario Argento's black-gloved Euro-occult attitude would coexist.

This goes out to my lovely friend Kanjena, who's done a lot to bring me to the point where I am now, the point of quiet, deceptively fragile, always nocturnal power."

Black Lodge Witch

"... dense, haunting atmospherics, morphing into the unabashedly naive, delicately retro je ne sais quoi, as an homage to dreams... When you listen to the echoes of these eerily kitschy, sweet dreams, resonating through the fatally cascading time, all you know is that something, somewhere is hurting. The dreams destined to become an intoxicating descent into the world Laura didn’t want to be in, which ends in the pure chilling testimony to what’s in jeopardy.

The true work of mourning in Twin Peaks in done through music. And this work of mourning unfolds in the undecidable space between light and fire."

Love Laura

The National

Tonight I found myself watching this live video, perhaps preparing myself for the new songs that will be coming with the new album, in May ;)
